“What Should Be Done with Deadbeat Parents?”
Non-payment of child support can lead to substandard conditions for your children. A child’s self esteem is so precious, people should fight to preserve it any way they can. Poor living conditions do nothing to boost a child; it will only in time drag them down. In addition, when the child is old enough to understand what has been done, he or she may develop resentment towards the parent who neglected his or her financial responsibilities. The issue of child support is a growing concern among not only single parents, but to the taxpayers as well, because they too contribute to the welfare of these children. As a result, it is necessary to implement laws that ensure that deadbeat parents take financial responsibility for their own children. True deadbeats have no money or assets. They live off the income of others, usually day by day, or they rely upon the generosity of friends for assistance through the hard times. Also, there is a difference between a parent who can’t pay, and one who won’t pay. With this in mind, there should be different levels of consequences for these individuals. Trial judges have a lot of sentencing options in indirect criminal contempt cases besides a straight jail sentence. For instance, the judge can place the deadbeat on probation under the supervision of the Department of Corrections. This is particularly therapeutic in certain cases because the deadbeat gets the opportunity to be supervised by a probation officer like other criminals.
