U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East
U.S. Foreign policy in the Middle East “U.S. Foreign policy in the Middle East” The issue of the United States involvement in the Middle East has been widely debated in the International community. It is an important issue thus far as it concerns fundamental human rights, International laws and economic questions that affect people and security all around the world. Various arguments have been put forward and opinions espoused concerning this sensitive issue. This essay will consider arguments against some aspects of “U.S. policy and how they relate to conflicts in the Middle East and terrorism”. Foremost is the Israel/Palestine situation. There is a strong connection between the different issues but I will discuss them separately to increase clarity. Due to constraints many of the topics cannot be fully discussed or covered. The U.S. government became strongly involved in the Middle East after World War 2 particularly in the lead up to the creation of the Jewish state of Israel. The U.S. maintained that Israel needed her help as it was to be a democracy, as well as moral reasons. It claimed a Jewish state creates a safe haven for Jewish people after their persecution in Europe. So this argument goes the Jewish community established a right to Palestine and the U.S.government was to be involved in supporting and recognizing Israel. With Trumans influence on other nations in the United Nations Israel was created and this led to the 1948 war and subsequent wars between Israel and its neighbours Syria, Jordan and Eygpt. However the above reasons are not primarily the only reasons for U.S. support..Firstly the U.S. President Truman and others in government held the fundamentalist Protestant idea that Israel was the God given land of the Jewish people and shared a similar sentiment towards the land with the Zionists(Jewish members involved in the creation of a Jewish state). Infact this belief is one interpretation from the new testament which originated from the Protestant theological revolution of the 17th century. This idea was linked to the second coming of Christ Strangely enough the ultra Orthodox Jews linked the creation of biblical Israel to the return of the Jewish messiah (Dr.Shariff ,1983). This ideology gained political movement during the 19th century and was shared with pro Israel evangelical Christians. Secondly another motivation for a Jewish state was as a solution to reduce the number of Jewish migrants to the U.S.
