George V
George Frederick Ernest Albert, better known as King George V, the second son of Edward VII and Alexandra was born June 3, 1865, at Marlborough House in London. George was born while his grandmother Queen Victoria still reigned. Most of his childhood was spent at Sandringham, Buckingham Palace, and Balmoral. His early education was somewhat insignificant as compared to that of his older brother. Edward, from the early age of 12, was trained for a career in the Royal Navy eventually rising to the rank of Commander. When Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence, died of pneumonia at the age of 26 in 1892, George assumed the role of the future heir; a role which many people and critics felt was “ill equipped both by temperament and training.” It was decided that he should no longer risk his life as a naval commander and was focused into his political studies in depth with the British Constitution. His advantage at the age of 26 was that he already had knowledge of outlying British lands that he had learned in the Royal Navy.
