Oedipus Rex - The classic greek tragic hero
Oedipus Rex is a prime example of the classic Greek tragic hero. He exemplifies the characteristics of a tragic hero. According to some a tragic hero is said to be someone who is privileged and exalted and whose high reputation and status have been earned by a heroic exploit, by intelligence, or by inherent nobility. The tragedy resides in a fall from glory that crushes not only the tragic hero, but other related characters as well, sometimes even generations. Oedipus is a highly exalted king with a renowned reputation and status. Oedipus gained such fame by solving the riddle of the Sphinx and saving the city of Thebes from her plagues. Oedipus’ reputation grew far and wide after accomplishing this deed. And when he married Jocasta he became the king of Thebes. A tragic hero gains his reputation and status by a heroic exploit.
