Jamaica, the third largest island in the Caribbean, has had a somewhat large effect on American society. This once British ruled country is now independent as of 1962. English is the official language of Jamaica but is significantly different than the English spoken in England or the United states. The population in Jamaica is about 97% black and the other 3% consist of whites and Asians. Jamaican economy depends strongly on exports such as sugar cane, bananas, coconuts, coffee, rum and aluminum. Jamaica uses a constitutional monarchy as a system of government that is run mainly by a prime minister.
