Be Yourself The song I have chosen is Everlast’s “Get Down”. There are several quotes I will use from the song to prove what my idea of the theme of the song may be. First, I should mention that I think that the intended audience for the song is anyone that realizes the direction that the rap industry has taken in the past few years. Though, I believe that artists are almost happy to sacrifice their individuality and uniqueness in order to be accepted by the massive record labels that control who makes it big and who gets left behind. This is also what I believe Everlast’s theme of this song is in part with the fact that they believe that they are not like this and that they can make on their own. I see everybody rockin’ the same old style And everyone’s sportin’ the same profile And all of y’all wearin’ the same name brands I hear everybody jackin’ these played out jams. (1-4) After listening to the song extensively I think these first four lines set the tone for the rest of the song. He sees all the other artists rockin’ the same old style, with the same profile, and the same name brands. Like they are cookie cutter versions of each other. I believe this is the same as the media trends pushed onto the artist by the big record company’s trying to sell an artist with a false image that they create as opposed to good old fashion natural talent.
