Jane's relationship with Helen Burns in Jane Eyre written by Charlotte Bronte is one of hope and belief in the future. It also highlights a difference in the characters as Helen has learnt to suffer while Jane refuses to surrender at any time. Getting into Lowood was a new and strange environment for Jane. Helen however stood by her side making sure Jane felt comfort. This was the first time for Jane to experience friendship as they get along very well. Helen was on of the pupil that was often punished by Miss. Scatcherd but she “bear it so quietly” which made Jane stunted. Jane felt sorry for Helen and was surprised with the way Helen handled herself accepting punishments and not fighting back. Jane’s action on going to have a chat with Helen after she was punished truly displayed her concern towards Helen just like what a friend would do. When Jane dropped her slate and was being ordered to stand on a stool, the often shy and quiet Helen was brave enough to console Jane though she was told no to do so.
