Oedipus Rex by Sophocles is about a man who marries his mother, kills his father, and has incestuous children and brings a plague upon his country. Oedipus the king of Thebes starts the play with a great life. Oedipus messes up his perfect life by trying to change his fate. According to the gods, there is a certain fate for each human on earth. So when Oedipus tries to change his fate he ends up ruining his perfect life. Oedipus cannot escape his fate in anyway. The play shows the concept of how a person can never escape their chosen fate. First, people try to change Oedipus’ fate. When Oedipus was a baby his parents, Iocaste and Laios, decide to kill him after learning his horrible fate. Iocaste couldn’t bring herself to kill the baby, so she then gives the baby to a shepherd to leave on a mountain.
