Consider whether post-exercise glycogen resynthesis is enhanced when protein is combined with carbohydrate in the post-exercise meal.
It is well known that high intensity endurance type exercise is limited by muscle glycogen stores. Maximising glycogen resynthesis in the recovery period is particularly important in order to maintain performance capacity of athletes. Studies are addressing ways to enhance the rate of resynthesis as it can take more than 24hours before complete restoration of muscle glycogen occurs. CHO feedings after exercise have already shown to promote restoration of muscle glycogen stores. Research is investigating the effects of CHO-protein feedings on muscle glycogen resynthesis proposing that it will be enhanced due to an increase in insulin levels leading to increased glucose uptake by the muscle. Zawadzki et al 1992 - muscle biopsies taken immediately following exercise and four hours after exercise - carbohydrate, protein and CHO-protein supplements were compared - carbohydrate amt selected as it was the amt reported to maximize muscle glycogen storage after exercise - protein amt selected as it was the amt reported to significantly increase insulin secretion in the absence and presence of carbs - CHO-protein was both amts combined - Therefore, feedings were not eucaloric and CHO-protein had enhanced caloric content - During recovery plasma glucose response of CHO greater than CHO-protein - Plasma insulin response of CHO-protein greater than CHO.
