Welfare
Welfare 1 Reading about our shrinking welfare state in the U.S. definitely raised some concerns. We agree with the author of this reading that since 1996 the welfare program has slowly been dismantled. The government has made welfare assistance to families temporary, and withdrew 55 billion dollars of federal aid to the poor families of this nation. The government removed such money from programs like, 27 billion dollars in food stamps, 7 billion dollars from child care, 3 billion over six years from child nutrition, and 2.5 billion over six years from social services programs. The federal government has capped the amount of federal aid the states get at 16.4 billion dollars. What about the growth of the population from year to year, or inflation. Independent studies verify that the true inflation rate is about three times the governments figures. That is 9 to 12 percent a year. At 9 percent the 16.4 billon dollars the states are getting will lose 1.5 billion dollars of its purchasing power from year to year. The government needs to take an active role to maintain funding levels that are current with the American population and inflation.
