adio 24/7 Log for Monday 29th September I arrived to the radio 24/7 lecture at 9:00 am and met up with Janey, Natalie and Charlene and was shortly afterwards joined by Becky, Yonah, Scott and a mystery guest called Seblan. Seblan was the only person whom I had not know, but introduced myself and found a little about her. Janey told us a little about what the module had entailed and that she decided to call this module radio 24/7 to jazz up the name, but her students from last year said that it was an appropriate name because that¡¦s the amount of time they had spent working on the their assignments. She said this with a touch of nervous laughter which made us all feel like our social lives were going to staying away from us at least till the end of the module. We were told that we had to arrange ourselves into groups of 6-8 for the rest of the first assignment at least. Despite everyone taking the radio 24/7 module not being present we decided that those who turned up would be in group A. My group subsequently consisted of Charlene, Natalie, Scott, Becky, Yonah and Seblan. I had two concerns at this point, firstly that it would be difficult to make 9:00 am lecture as I commute from Reading, and secondly that the group dynamic wasn¡¦t quite as I would have liked. I say this because Natalie and Charlene grew up together and are well acquainted with Scott and Becky who are good friends. With over half the group firmly bonded it could lead to the rest of us being slightly frozen out, but decided that there is no point speculating as to what might happen, and try to see if we could all work as a fully functioning group. Music Programme We got under way with our first group meeting and discussed different ideas we could use for our radio programme and they included: ƒæ Music through the years ƒæ Movie soundtracks ƒæ Tracking ex-band members ƒæ World music ƒæ Music for movies We discussed which of these ideas would be the most appropriate based on the knowledge we had and the confidence we had in bringing them alive and turning them into a 30 min radio show. This quickly ruled out the World music programme, as not only did we have very little knowledge of the subject, no of us had an interest in it. Tacking ex-band members, seemed good as an idea, but we didn¡¦t feel confident that a 30 min programme could be made from it whilst still keeping it fresh. The idea of looking at different music through the years was discussed, but none of us felt it would be specific enough for a music programme and it would be difficult to find the right station and target audience, although possible. Quite simply, there was a lack of enthusiasm to do any of these three ideas. However, the rest of the group was very keen on doing the idea concerning movie soundtracks, in which we would review the top ten soundtracks. I personally wasn¡¦t too keen on the idea, as I am not a movie fan and knew very little about soundtracks, but it wouldn¡¦t be too much of a problem to do any research required, for a good programme to be produced. Our programme was going to be about movie sound tracks from the 1990¡¦s and so decided that it would be most suited to radio one, aiming at a target audience being 18 ¡V 30 year olds. To get the group working efficiently, we were all given job titles to focus our energies on specific tasks. They were as follows: Charlene ¡V Editor Natalie ¡V Vox pops Dave ¡V Presenter Becky ¡V Editing Scott ¡V Music, including music beds Yonah ¡V Interview Seblan ¡V Interview or Vox pops Seblans¡¦ role was to be tied with either Yonah¡¦s or Natalie¡¦s as she hadn¡¦t had much radio experience in the past and we thought she would need to be eased into the work. As a group, we brainstormed to come up with a list of movie sound tracks which were released in the 1990¡¦s. Those films that came up included: ƒæ Pulp Fiction ƒæ Titanic ƒæ Mission Impossible ƒæ Robin Hood ƒæ Four weddings and a funeral ƒæ Bodyguard ƒæ Notting hill ƒæ Dirty Dancing ƒæ Pretty Women ƒæ Romeo and Juliet ƒæ Dangerous Minds For an interview we thought we could make use of a local DJ, so Becky called to see if it was possible make use of him. He was fine with it, and a suitable time was arranged for Yonah to interview him. We ended our group meeting with Becky being given job to find an official top ten soundtrack of the year and emailing me, the list, So I could begin work on extracting some background information. The group decided to meet at 10:30 am the following day. Later on in the evening, as I had not yet received an email from Becky, I started to look for the information myself using google as my search tool. I was unable to find the information I required though. I rang yonah later on in the night explaining that I couldn¡¦t make the meeting at 10:30am due to needing to sort out my mobile phone contract after not being able to reach Charlene Tuesday 30th September In a bid to get through to Charlene, I ran Scott to ask if I should try and bring in any back up material as Becky hadn¡¦t emailed me, but Scott wasn¡¦t at the meeting, because he was enrolling. I arrived in Luton at 11:15am to be greeted by Becky, Yonah and Charlene, who explained that they had decided our programme from a top ten soundtrack of the 1990¡¦s, to a top ten love songs of all time. This was decided because we were not able to ascertain the information we required to do our original idea. They had already compiled a top ten list, with help of using VH1 from the website: http://www.vh1.com/music/radio/stations/100_greatest_love_songs/station.jhtml Seblan and Natalie joined us later, and the five of us discussed which songs we thought were good, but stuck to our top ten. We worked through till around 12:20pm, and then decided to split for lunch, and then regroup at Becky¡¦s house with Scott. At Becky¡¦s house Scott was trying to install cool edit pro on Becky¡¦s computer, to begin with while we drank tea. I spoke to Seblan, finding out about where she is from and what her aspirations in life are. As a group we then discussed our top ten love songs ƒæ I will always love you ƒæ Everything I do ƒæ My Heart will go on ƒæ Time of my Life ƒæ Unchained Melody ƒæ Endless love ƒæ Take my breath away ƒæ Flying without wings ƒæ How deep is your love ƒæ Close to you Our target audience needed to be re-evaluated as did our chosen station for the broadcasting of the show. This was discussed in great length, and it was finally decided we would being aiming for a 30 year old + target audience positioning our 30 min programme in the 10am ¡V 12pm Sunday morning slot on BBC 2. The program would be replacing the Steve Wright¡¦s Sunday Love Songs, with a Valentines special. Chiltern FM was also a consideration for us for a station to broadcast the show on, but we decided against it because it had a smaller audience, and they target age range is for younger people than that of BBC Radio 2. Our play list was suited more to an older listener than that of Chiltern FM, so it made perfect sense to tailor our show for broadcast on BBC Radio 2. What we got out of the interview was a concern of mine, so we discussed what exactly we wanted to get out of the interviewee. The questions Yonah was going ask included finding out the DJ¡¦s favorite love song his plans for Valentines Day and why some songs are still popular. I wasn¡¦t convinced that the interview content would fit in with the style of the programme, but I¡¦d have to wait and see. The reason we decided to interview, DJ Ben Mitchell was because he plays in two major Luton clubs to an audiences ranging in their age. Time was spent placing our top ten songs onto one CD to make things easier. There was an idea to have the thunderbirds 10 second countdown used to help with our top ten recap if someone was able to easily obtain it. We also decide on having a competition to thicken keep the audience listening and pad out the show. Natalie suggested that everyone should take on one or two songs, to find out some background information which the presenter could take and then tailor into cues for each song. The information would include, the year song was released, the highest chart position and the impact it made. It was agreed that the rest of the group would send me their gems of information by Wednesday or latest Thursday afternoon, as I was going to be away from Friday till Sunday night. Thursday 2nd October I haven¡¦t received any work from anyone and send Charlene, our editor an email expressing my worries. Friday 3rd October I received one email from Charlene with her work in the morning, apologizing for the delay and saying that she will get on to the others to get their work done as soon as possible. Still no emails from anyone else in the afternoon, and I am getting increasingly worried as it is becoming apparent that our work is going to suffer. Sunday 5th October I check my email at night, to see that both Scott and Becky had sent me their work, late on Friday evening. I don¡¦t have any time to do anything with it, as it is very late and I have leave at 7:00am the next morning for a 9:00 am meeting with the group. Monday 6th October I arrive for our meeting and see Natalie, Becky Yonah and Seblan, with Charlene arriving at 9:45 Scott arrives at 10:00. No one was really used to having to be up so early on a Monday morning. I ask Natalie and Yonah and Seblan for their work which was supposed to be sent to me on Thursday. Yonah is able to give me her work on disc, while Natalie and Seblan still have to do the research. As Scott and Becky sent me theirs at 20:35 on Friday night it meant that I wasn¡¦t able to do anything with it until Monday morning. Not having the cues ready, meant that Both Becky and Scott were not able to do anything, which really set us behind. Had all the work been sent to me on time, Scott would have been ready to add the music and Becky could begin editing. I worked on the pieces of work I had been given till 11:50am and then had to go off to my Marketing seminar. Before I left though Seblan, and Natalie had given me their background information on their songs. Meanwhile, We heard Natalie¡¦s vox pops, and all agreed that the levels were not right and they were too distorted. Becky tried sorting out the problem using hiss reduction, but we still were not able to use all the vox pops we ideally wanted to use. Yonah¡¦s interview was played to us, and we decided that the interview would flow much better only having the interviewees voice, and taking Yonah¡¦s out. Yonah wasn¡¦t too happy about it, but accepted the majority¡¦s decision.
