Design argument
I am going to discuss the various arguments for and against the design argument. Through this paper I hope to logically assert my view that the design argument does not prove the existence of a theistic God. The design argument is an argument for the existence of God. I have received Christian brochures more than once in my mailbox, describing the beauty and perfection of a nice automobile. Then at the end the brochure asks you to believe that this automobile has arisen from nothing, that nobody has created it. It is absurd to believe that such a wonderful machine could have originated from nothing, without a creator. Thus we must look at our own universe and world, and seeing how perfectly it works together, embrace the idea of their God. The design argument uses analogy, and since we do not have the means or the possibility to use other universes in our analogy, we must rely on objects in our own world which could slightly resemble our universe. William Paley, an eighteenth century theologian, compared our universe to a watch. When we observe a watch we see that all of its parts are connected with each other and rely on one another to work. A watch is a teleological system, a system of parts in which the parts are arranged so that under proper conditions, they work together to serve a certain purpose. Most machines, such as cars, trains, or cameras are teleological systems and may even have separate teleological systems inside their own system. It would be ridiculous to believe that these machines were not from intelligent design. We know that these machines have all been designed and created, to serve a certain purpose. The design argument claims that in the world of nature, we find many things which are teleological systems.
