Registered Nurse A registered nurse has many duties. The summarized description of a registered nurse is to administer nursing care to ill or injured persons. Includes administrative, public health, industrial, private duty, and surgical nurses. There are about 9 typical tasks for an RN and they are: · Provides health care, first aide, and immunization in facilities such as hospitals, schools and industry. · Examines patients to assess their physical condition and to determine the nature of an illness or injury. · Records patient’s medical information, examination results and vital signs. · Prepares patients for an assist doctors with detailed examinations. · Order or conducts laboratory and diagnostic tests, and evaluates test results. · Sterilizes instruments, equipment, and supplies. · Recommends drugs or other forms of treatment such as physical therapy. · Discusses cases with physicians. · Maintains stocks of medical supplies. The general workplace skills are important to have in order to fulfill the basic tasks. They are broken down into four separate groups. They are social skills, complex problem solving skills, system skills, and resource management skills. For social skills you need a medium level of social perceptiveness, coordination, instructing and service orientation. For complex problem solving skills you need to have a medium level of problem identification, information gathering, information organization, idea evaluation, implementation planning, and solution appraisal. For system skills you need a medium level of systems perception, identification of key causes, and judgment and decision-making.
