Charles Darwin was born in England on February 12, 1809. When Darwin was sixteen years old he left his home in Shrewsbury, England, to study medicin at Edinburgh University. He did not stay for long though since he was disgusted by the sight of surgery being performed without anaesthetics. Later he went to Cambridge University to prepare himself to become a clergyman in the Church. But instead of becoming a clergyman when he had received his degree he accepted an invitation to become an naturalist on the Ship the Beagle. The Beagle was to depart on the 31st of December, 1831 for a five year scientific expedition around the world.
