Can Computer think?
What is Artificial Intelligence? Artificial Intelligence is the ability of a computer or another machine to perform the activities that are normally thought to require intelligence. This research paper is based on Artificial Intelligence, known as AI. It could be said that the human brain is nothing more than a machine, and as we know it to be capable of thought it would be fair to suspect that therefore machines can think and it is probably this, or a similar premise that inspired AI. Some believe that if a computer can be programmed correctly to follow certain human processes, then it is to all intense and purposes thinking as we do. Alan Turing, a pioneer in developing computer logic as we know it today, was the first to approach the topic of artificial intelligence. An example of a program which was put through the Turing test was ELIZA which attempted to imitate one side of human conversation. But even if this program did appear to be totally human, could this be said to actually be thinking? John Searle an American philosopher, who is best known for his work on the human mind and human consciousness, disagrees with Alan Turing test. According to Searle, the human mind and human consciousness cannot be reduced simply to physical events and brain states. Searle is known for developing an experiment called the “Chinese Room” argument. Searle argues that despite not being able to understand Chinese, he would, under the correct circumstances, be able to answers Chinese questions in Chinese, relating to a story also written in Chinese. The scenario is summarized as follows; Imagine sitting isolated in a room; every so often you are given a wad of Chinese script.
