In November 2003 Action Energy from the Carbon Trust launches a national campaign to raise awareness of energy efficiency. The campaign, called 'Lifeblood', highlights the fact that British small business is wasting as much as 30 per cent of its energy. With SMEs footing an annual energy bill of £3.5 billion, this amounts to a loss of £1.1 billion or £7,000 per business. A dedicated campaign helpline - 0800 917 30 30 - has been set up offering organisations a free Action Energy Starter Pack The scope of Carbon Management extends beyond traditional energy efficiency to reduce CO2 emissions. It does not focus solely on energy-related emissions or any single aspect of an organisation's CO2 emissions impact. Nor does it concentrate only on CO2. Instead, carbon management looks at every aspect of an organisation's performance in relation to climate change mitigation: It considers all CO2 emissions, however they are caused, in terms of both existing and new projects It explores direct emissions and indirect emissions such as electricity consumption and transport use It addresses the possibilities offered by renewable energy, waste reduction and the use of recycled raw materials It assesses "upstream" emissions caused by suppliers and "downstream" emissions created by an organisation's products/activities during their lifecycle The comprehensive nature of Carbon Management means that it can impact positively on all of an organisation's operations, from research & development, procurement and logistics through to cost management, branding, and investor, employee or local community relations.
