Xplotiation of Terra By: Eric Camil Jr ENC1101-59 11/22/03 The internet based web-dictionary (dictionary.com) displays the word “exploit” as “To make use of selfishly or unethically: a country that exploited peasant labor.” After this brief definition, it lists a key and valuable synonym for the word exploit. That word is manipulate. Man manipulates, exploits and practically rapes the world on a daily basis in some form or another of whatever he possibly can. From the ocean to the tree’s to the ground we walk upon. The environment to humanity has become like another can of soda. Pop the top, take a swig, drink it down and dump it either when your done with it, or you just do not want anymore. So simple to just throw things on the ground, dump things into the ocean, burn, kill and destroy the millions of undiscovered denizens which have lived peacefully in the forests of South America. There is a national holiday that is called Earth Day, in the hopes that out of 365 days, in one day, enough tree’s, enough flowers can be planted. Enough trash can be picked up. Enough resources can be used to the last drop. That will make up for the rest of the year when we beat and punish the ground we walk in, the oceans we swim in, and the air that fills our lungs. Thor Heyerdahl says on the subject of man taking advantage of the ocean that “it is the vast extent of ocean surface that has made man of all generations imagine a correspondingly unfathomable depth” ( Heyerdahl pg 339) Because of this belief, which can be disputed on the sole basis of opinion – the idea of infinity is created. Once there is no limit to a resource, it is then used a much as possible with little or no concern at all.
