In the story “Once More to the Lake”, the author (White) uses vivid details to enable the reader to capture the many different emotions the author feels during the story. When the story is examined beyond just reading enjoyment, the symbolism comes to life. Carefully chosen words show the contrast in the way the lake and its surroundings have changed from when the narrator was a child until now, when he is bringing his son.
