Cell Theory Development In 1665, an English scientist and inventor Robert Hooke discovered cells. He constructed his own better compound microscope than the ones there were available at these days. He took a piece of cork and carefully cut a thin slice and examined it under a microscope. He discovered that the cork had tiny pores like “honey comb units” which he described as “cells” meaning “little rooms” or “boxes”. The word “cell” did not take on its now-existing meaning for almost 200 years. Hooke examined lots of things under a microscope like plants, animals, textiles and minerals.
