Nature takes it’s Toll on Man In Stephen Crane’s “The Open Boat” and Jack London’s “To Build a Fire,” nature is not selective about who lives and who dies; but, neither is nature a quiet “bystander.” In these stories nature’s force does not allow the people to succeed. The characters try again and again to accomplish their goal only to find out nature would destroy again. For instance, in “To Build a Fire,” the man tries several times to build a fire but he fails because of the forces of nature.
