Orion The Hunter The constellation Orion is one of the most well known constellations in history (with the Big Dipper being the most well known). Orion was known to the Sumerians of Mesopotamia as Uru-anna or the Light of Heaven (Orion The Hunter). The Jews called Orion Gibbor, or “the Giant,” who was strapped to the sky dome for rebelling against Jehova (The Constellation). The Chinese, Hindus, Egyptians and Phoenicians all had names and stories for the constellation, but it is the name Orion given by the Greeks that has remained and is used today. Orion is visible from October through March (winter months) in both hemispheres, but is most easily observed in the northern hemisphere during winter evenings.
