As an editor of the Philadelphia Gazette, I interview two signers of the Declaration of Independence. They are Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. Benjamin Franklin might be think of as a printer of papers and almanacs, the discovery of electricity, the inventor, the statesman. He was actually an editor and proprietor of the ˇ§ Pennsylvania Gazette.ˇ¨ He worked for various printers and eventually helped write the Declaration of Independence. Anyways, this interview dealt with Benjamin Franklinˇ¦s diplomacy and overseas work He told me how on the next day the assembly of Pennsylvania unanimously elected him delegate to the 2d Continental Congress. He now became a zealous supporter of the war, and presently of the Declaration of Independence. When congress, in July decided to send one more petition to the king, he wrote a letter, which David Hartley read aloud in the House of Commons. ˇ§If you flatter yourselves,ˇ¨ said Franklin, ˇ§ with beating us into submission, you know neither the people nor the country.
