My book called, From the Workers’ State to the Golden State is written by Steven J. Gold. I have four book reviews written about the book and they each explain something different. I chose this book because it relates to the religion I am, which is Jewish, and describes my background heritage. The people were Soviet Jews from the USSR, known as Russia today. As for the book itself, each chapter talks about something new and to get an idea of the reviews, I will give some feedback of what the book is dealing with. The first part of this book talks about why they came. The second part talks about family patterns. This talks about a family coming to America after Kiev and how they are surviving. The third part talks about earning a living in a new society. Women in the professional field are trying to earn a living and how they are doing it. The fourth part deals with Jewish identity and behavior. When they first came, ethnicity was an issue and it talks about how the Jews didn’t change who they are. The fifth part talks about community formation among Jews from the former Soviet Union. Jewish assimilation and ethnic associations is discussed, along with Soviet Jews not being part of the American Jewish community. The final part is the conclusion. It deals with the reflections on American life. My first review comes from an article called possibilities for migration anthropology. It talks about different immigrants coming to America and settling down in suburban areas. The second review I found talks about changing identities. Three groups of people, which are the Vietnamese, Soviet Jews, and Salvadorans have been known as refugee flows. The third review that I found comes from a journal of American ethnic history. Gold explains that around 325,000 Jews have emigrated to the U.S since the 1960’s, all coming from the former Soviet Union. My fourth review comes from American anthropologists. Gold’s study of the Russian Jews raises some issues about the immigrants that came to America. Their ethnic differences comes from their shared experiences of being treated as different rather than their sharing of the religion they practice, or what their culture is. The most valuable issues discussed in the book relate to the immigrants coming to America and how they started up a new life. Moving from one country to another country is never easy and just the way these people did it, is incredible.
