Jane Eyre Departure themes
In Charlotte Bronte’s novel, Jane Eyre, Jane endures four major momentous “departures” that influence her life, each in a diverse way. These four departures: leaving the Reed family, leaving Lowood, leaving Thornfield, and leaving St. John significantly change and influence Jane’s journey of life. Leaving these four places form Jane into the courageous and daring character that she is. Throughout the novel, Jane displays these characteristics by accepting the fact that her life is non-idyllic compared to other girls at this time. Though she undergoes many difficult, complicated experiences during these departures, she is not willing to let her audacious spirit be brought down by anyone. Growing up at Gateshead Hall was almost unbearable for the young Jane Eyre. For ten years, Jane encountered nothing but abuse and neglect in the Reed home, being mistreated and severely castigated often. Living at Gateshead Hall is what causes Jane to start realizing her independence and begin standing up for herself.
