"Love In L.A vs. Summer"
“Love in L.A.” by Dagoberto Gilb and “Summer” by David Updike are two love stories that describe love in two different ways. “Summer” can be characterized as a true love story, while “Love in L.A.”, on the other hand, can be characterized more as an artificial love story. Both stories contain elements that clearly distinguish the variation between true love and artificial love. In the short story “Love in L.A.,” a young gentleman by the name of Jake is driving beneath a congested highway of L.A. and as he is driving, he is also fantasizing about having accessories for his car such as mellow speakers and “a cruise control for those longer trips”(Gilb 236). While daydreaming, Jake happens to crash into the back of a car driven by a young female named Mariana. They exchange insurance and address information, then Mariana gives Jake her telephone number and tells Jake to call her. In fact, we know that Jake gave Mariana false information because he didn’t have a drivers license or insurance.
