In the cold dark room where a limbless body lies, having none of the five senses. In the darkness the man expresses his thoughts to only himself with no one to listen to him. He has no way to communicate or even feel the outside world. As nostalgia thoughts and regrets come to his mind, he wonders if he has made the right decisions in life and imagines the many possibilities that he would have had. Having no sense of the outer world, his only way of knowing vaguely what is happening in the outer world is by his sensory nerves transmitting signal from his skin to his brain. The book that describes a limbless and powerless man that is a product of the cruel human warfare is Johnny Got His Gun, By Dalton Trumbo. In the story, Joe Bonham, a product of war, half-consciously lies in a hospital bed hoping for his death and regretting upon many decisions he had made in life. Joe had grown up in Shale City, Colorado where he spent his childhood years. Remembering the food his mother used to prepare and the night of his father’s death, Joe was filled with nostalgia and reverie. Later Joe reveals how he had borrowed his father’s fishing pole for Bill Harper to use and lost is in the process. Joe thinks back and regrets borrowing the pole because it was one of the most valued possessions of his father’s because they didn’t have much in those days. Joe’s father did not punish Joe because it was their last summer together camping and his father wanted to make it the best he could. Joe also thinks of his girlfriend Kareen and how they had spent a night in her room the day before he went to war and feels her body next to him in his mind. Joe thinks of what Kareen would be doing at this exact moment and if she would be scared and disgusted by Joe’s condition. Joe suddenly thought also of the betrayal of his best friend growing up, Bill Harper, upon him. Joe had known that his old girlfriend Diane had cheated on him, but it was not with whom Joe thought she cheated on him with.
