Campbell's Approach to the Hero Theory
1. Campbell’s approach to the “hero” role in film states that there is a mentor(s) for that hero. A mentor is basically someone who sorts of shows the hero the way to travel, or helps him along his journey. In the movie Vertigo, the mentor in my opinion is actually the person that Scottie (the main character) is trying to save at the beginning of the film, and then later on change at the end of the film. Scottie has a problem basically getting intimate with women, either a sexual dysfunction of some sort or just plain impotence. During his journey, you see his one time girlfriend and fiancée Midge come onto Scottie, and he isn’t really able to do anything about it.
