Chrisitians in the Marketplace

Everyday thousands of Christians enter the mission field, and I’m not talking about missionaries overseas, evangelists, or even pastors. I’m talking about the marketplace. Each person who calls him/herself a follower of Christ and who has a job is responsible for their own mission field. Whether you work a typical “9 to 5” job 40 hours a week or are a part-time employee at Starbucks, as a Christian you are responsible for your witness on the job. The marketplace is a very important mission field, one that is sometimes overlooked in the ministry world. I feel a very strong call from God to focus my own personal ministry in the marketplace. This however does not mean that I have to wait until I am in a full-time career to do this. I can start now at my current job, part-time manager at White Barn Candle Company. In my experience on the job I have seen the most fruit come out of the questions my co-workers will ask me in response to my attitude and behavior. It is a very rewarding to be recognized as someone who is always on time, listens to management, and tries her very best at everything she does. When my co-workers recognize this, they begin to ask me questions like “Why are you always in a good mood? How do you get things done so efficiently? What else do you do besides work here?“ It is through these questions, as a result of my work ethic, that I can share openly and honestly about God. Because of this desire I have I am constantly reading books and talking to business people discussing how to be an effective Christian in the marketplace. What exactly does this look like tangibly? Through my research and experience in many different jobs (retail, teaching, childcare…) I have come to discover some very key guidelines to follow that will enable you to be an effective witness for Christ at your job; all of which relate back to maintaining a consistent witness.
