Last month, Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO), a supplier of “high-tech nutrition” to many famous athletes, was raided. The results of such a raid were the confiscation of steroids, human growth hormones, and synthetic testosterone. Obviously, this raid could mean huge problems for many athletes, yet also a look into what may have been a huge factor in recent athletic achievements. Many people realize that there is an epidemic of performance enhancing drug use among many big athletes. Outstanding records and compelling performances have been recognized and even labeled as the result of drugs. Federal agencies recently have been cracking down on the drug use by athletes and have launched several investigations, which have called superstars such as Barry bonds, Jason Giambi and Marion Jones to testify (although, separate charges have yet to be pressed against these athletes.) Charles Yesalis, the coeditor of “Performance-Enhancing Substances in Sport and Exercise”, has stated “This has the potential to explode into the biggest doping scandal ever to hit out shores.” A handful of the athletes who have acknowledged receiving a subpoena have denied any wrongdoing.
