Enigma by Robert Harris Author Colleen Salo Tom Jericho, a great World War II cryptanalyst, has suffered a nervous break down after cracking one of the most difficult codes used in the war. After a b reif rest, he is called back to Bletchley Park, the British center of code breaking, in order to resolve the mystery he had once deciphered. Jericho had solved the infamous Enigma code used by the Germans. This was a machine that encoded messages about different happenings in the war, such as in structions for the Luftwaffe or Rommel's forces in Africa. More importantly fo r Jericho, the Enigma code Shark was the code used for German U-boats. Thes e U-boats had destroyed countless convoys of important cargo and munitions tryi ng to get to Britian. The difficulty with Shark was that the Enigma machine used a four rotor system instead of a three rotor system, making it mathematica lly far more difficult to solve. Once the group at Bletchley recovered a copy of a U-boat Short Weather Cipher Book, Jericho had all the information he neede d to break the cipher and put a stop to the destruction of the convoys.
