Rap and Rock are They Really That Different There may be many of differences between rock and rap music, but I believe that they are actually a lot alike. Rock has been a popular form of youthful music since the 1950’s, although Hip-Hop never made it until the 1980’s. While they both originated from the same source, to most people Rock is generally thought to be a white person’s music, and rap is thought to be African American music. The source was African American blues and jazz. Rock and rap use different types of musical sounds, drumbeats, and lyrical tones to reach out to people who understand the lifestyle the music portrays. Rock’s sound is composed of guitars, drums, and vocals. It’s lyrical sound generally mirrors the sound of the music being played. In the fifties, it was considered a rebellion for teens to listen to rock music. Its expressions brought the idea of real life and partying to the general public. Rap has less of a lyrical reflection of the music than Rock, but is still used as a way of expressing hard times in life. Like rock, rap uses its libretto to reach out to the world and tell about what really goes on in parts of the world that aren’t viewed on television or in the news. Some rap music shows anger a large extent and some joy and satisfaction just like rock does. Rap conveys another type of lifestyle known as ‘growing up in the hood’ that is displayed.
