More Rap/Hip-Hop In Schools? I. Introduction A. Did u hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete. Proving nature’s laws wrong it learned 2 walk without having feet. Funny it seems but by keeping its dreams it learned 2 breathe fresh air. Long live the rose that grew from concrete when no one else even cared! By: Tupac Shakur When people hear this is by 2 Pac it shocks them a little bit. 2 Pac did have a softer side and a side that everyone can relate to. People have a hard time gripping that Rap artists are poets that put their words to music. We could discuss this poem’s rhythm and rhyme scheme. Also with a little knowledge about Tupac’s youth, we could discuss the poems deeper meaning. This is a great example of how Rap and rap artists can be incorporated into today’s schools. Rap and hip-hop have so many benefits that they should have a more vital role in the school system. II. Rap is bad? a. People say most Rap is Garbage Hip-hop -- brash, vulgar, and in-your-face-hip-hop -- is indisputably the dominant youth culture today. Its most controversial front men floss mad ice (wear lots of diamonds and other expensive jewelry), book bad bitches (usually scantily clad, less that take home kind of girl and in general, party it up. Its most visible females brag about their sexual dexterity, physical attributes ad cunning tactics when it comes to getting their rent paid. (Jamilah Evelyn) i. What MTV and Kiss FM play doesn’t represent all rap. “I think that what causes the most grief is that hip-hop comes across as heartless, valueless, nihilistic, and certainly anachronistic if not atheistic?says Dr. Nat Irvin ii. There is some rap that is garbage out there: Nelly, Ja-Rule and other commercial rappers do give rap a tarnished name. iii. There are some good rappers that can send messages and have a point behind them: Beastie Boys, 2 Pac, Public Enemy and Nas just to name a few. These rappers have a message behind their lyrics for most of their songs. They inform as well as entertain. (Show Beastie Boys “Alive?video) As we can see this “rap?video promotes a positive message about life and the attitudes you take towards it. Topics like poverty, racism, homosexuality, war and health care come up. With a catchy beat it keeps people’s attention while attempting to enlighten them at the same time. Nas?newest rap “I Can?is another great example of positive rap lyrics in music: Be, B-Boys and girls, listen again This is for grown looking girls who's only ten The ones who watch videos and do what they see As cute as can be, up in the club with fake ID Careful, 'fore you meet a man with HIV You can host the TV like Oprah Winfrey Whatever you decide, be careful, some men be Rapists, so act your age, don't pretend to be Older than you are, give yourself time to grow You thinking he can give you wealth, but so Young boys, you can use a lot of help, you know You thinkin life's all about smokin weed and ice You don't wanna be my age and can't read and write Begging different women for a place to sleep at night Smart boys turn to men and do whatever they wish If you believe you can achieve, then say it like this I know I can (I know I can) Be what I wanna be (be what I wanna be) If I work hard at it (If I work hard at it) I’ll be where I wanna be (I’ll be where I wanna be) III.
