Case Study The Organisation : The University of the West Indies providing a service for over ten thousand students The objective is to identify the use of telecommunication and network systems and the impact on management systems in achieving its strategic objectives. Specifically the University utilises telecommunication and networking in the following areas: „« Online registration 2002/2003 using UWI website via the E-mail service „« LAN „« WAN „« Teleconferencing „« Distance learning The projected benefit of the use of the telecommunication and network systems to the organisation are: ƒæ Online registration ¡V The registration process must be efficient and effective as possible eliminating long lines, data must be processed quickly and accurately and ensure a smooth transition from registration to classes. ƒæ LAN ¡V The objectives were to provide a unified campus through increase communication, feedback from customer and staff, keeping the campus informed on events and training ƒæ WAN ¡V This linked the three campuses to provide efficiencies and cost savings by using similar finance and administrative packages, capitalising on synergies and being able to customize service across campus.
