Communists won once again The Vietnam War began in 1957 and ended in April 30th 1975. It cost the United States severely with thousands of American soldiers and billions of dollars. During the war, the majority of Americans did not support President Nixon’s aid for South Vietnam; there were many protests and chaos throughout the United States itself. With the help of the United States, South Vietnam was able to hold against North Vietnam until American troops withdrew from Vietnam due to the Paris accord of 1973, an agreement to bring the war to an end by both sides, North and South Vietnam. One of the reasons South Vietnam could not stand against communist leaders from North Vietnam were the corruptive problems in the South Vietnamese government including bribery and amassing government properties. The most well known communist leader from the North was Ho Chi Minh. Having great eagerness of ruling and uniting Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh continued to attack and occupy troops in South Vietnamese areas despite the Paris accord of 1973. On April 30th 1975, the Vietnam War came to an end when North Vietnamese troop occupied Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam. It has been almost thirty years since the end of that abominable defeat of the United States and South Vietnam, yet its effects and memories still haunt people.
