The American Dream Long ago, the American Dream was embodied in a farm boy named Abraham Lincoln, a gangly rail-splitter from a log cabin in Illinois, who could aspire to the very leadership of the nation, and achieve it. Now the American Dream is embodied in another farm boy named Elvis Presely. What powered the country was a belief in the Protestant ethic: God rewards those who work hard; our lives will slowly improve and out children’s lives will be a paradise. The influence of religion began to gradually shrink after the building of the church buildings. We are much richer today, more comfortable, but are we happy?
