The Panama Canal The Panama Canal was built along the Isthmus of Panama in Central America. It allows vessels to travel between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Vessels can reach their destination sooner because they don’t have to go around South America. U.S. involvement in the Panama Canal started in 1902, when President Roosevelt discussed a treaty with Columbia about Panama. They rejected the treaty.
