San Francisco Airport Expansion
San Francisco Airport Expansion The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is planning an expansion. It is proposing a “runway configuration” that will create a new runway and add on to two existing ones (Save the Bay 1). This new construction will be the largest bay fill expansion in over 60 years, covering 2 square miles, which is more than 1400 acres of the bay (Save the Bay 1). Extensive research shows that the expansion is generating much animosity from environmentalists and bay residents. They are concerned about the potential negative effects this expansion will have on the bay and their own living conditions. While the idea of expanding the San Francisco Airport seems like a good one, the harmful environmental impacts outweigh the benefits of the airports growth. SFO has indicated several intended purposes for the project. However, most are very vague and don’t establish a clear and precise reason for the expansion. Some of these reasons include the need to “cut noise [and] end the nation’s worst bad weather delays;” although, poor weather only accounts for less than 20 percent of the 64 percent delays (Gathright 198). The other 44 percent probably comes from technical difficulties or miscommunication between airlines. The mere 20 percent of weather delays should not be enough of a reason to expand over the bay. SFO reports general issues as their reason for expanding like noise or delays, but believe the expansion is important because of the economic impact on San Francisco . SFO has to take into account the cost of time and labor that adds into the overall damage of the expansion. Its primary purpose for the project is to increase its own “capacity to receive additional numbers of flight arrivals and departures in all weather situations and at all times” (Lewis 2). SFO wants to increase its capacity because this will create more business, which means more income.
