Hayleyen Taramorahoa Mrs. Woodal Tech Paper December 4, 2003 Third Period College Prep English Tech Paper I have researched a variety of over the counter pain relieving drugs. I have found exactly how they relieve pain, the dosage, the price, the side effects, what the drug contains, and how the drug is taken. Acetaminophen is the first drug I researched and it relieves pain by elevating the pain entry, that is, by requiring a larger quantity of pain to develop before it is felt by a person. It reduces fever through its action on the heat-regulating center of the brain. Specifically, it tells the center to lower the body’s temperature when the temperature has risen. In 1951, Acetaminophen was approved by the FDA. For adults the oral dose is 352 to 650 mg every four to six hours. The maximum daily dose is four grams. Depending on the age of the child, the range is 40-650 mg every four hours. The side affect of using this over the counter drug is liver damage. Possible damage to the liver is increased by consuming an alcoholic drink while taking this drug. Acetaminophen may contain antioxidants. These are determined to be beneficial in warding off disease. The tablet is swallowed via mouth with a glass of water or juice. It disintegrates in the stomach into tiny pieces. Prices vary because retailers are free to set their own prices. Prices also vary on the size of the container that the drug is sold in.
