Vertigo
Vertigo’s Analysis There are a lot of filmic elements that contributes to the mood and message of the film Vertigo. Camera position, sound and camera angles are the most important element in the film. There are a variety of shot throughout the film, however most of the shot are either close-up or long shot. With the combination of sound it makes the film much more interactive to the audience. At the beginning of the film the names of the director and the two leads appear in front of an extreme close-up of a woman's face and the rest of the cast and crew are listed while spirals rush towards the audience. This disorientating experience is followed by the rooftop chase, this events gives the audience a hint that the main character will later pursuit of a mystery. The first piece of character development is achieved entirely visually with the famous zoom-in shot establishing Scottie's vertigo and the fear of death that lies beneath him. The roof-top chase is rhythmic in its sequencing of shots and doesn't show how Scottie gets down. Hitchcock manages to perfectly integrate symbolism and raw emotion, both represented visually, into the story of a man with a terrifying weakness. The camera pulls back from Scottie across the diners at Ernie's, moving in to Madeleine as the music fades up. The view cuts to that of Scottie but as Madeleine moves towards him, and he hides his gaze. She pauses right next to him and both are separated, in profile, in their own frames. The light seems to come up behind Madeleine making her look like an amazingly beautiful cameo. There is no further reluctance shown, the audience dissolve straight from Ernie's to Scottie waiting outside the Elster home.
