Catholic Diocese Case 1 Workshop Four Business Article Paper Oliver Sorrell mksorrell@earthlink.net University of Phoenix, Southern Colorado Division Executive Tower Business Law BUS/415 To: Marilyn Doig May 27, 2003 Catholic Diocese Case 2 The Catholic Diocese has always been on holy ground. They were untouchable and could do no harm. The Pope, Bishops, and even the priests were thought upon as saints and messengers of God. That is up until now; the Catholic Church has come under fire as being a haven for pedophile priests. The times are changing and people who have been abused by the clergy are coming forward with there tales of horror and the lawyers are fast on the heels. Allegations of sexual abuse have spread like wild fire across the United States initiating lawsuits bringing monetary fortune to the victims. The church has already paid out huge settlements to the victims that were abused by priests in their diocese, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. The young children that were sexually abused have the right to a fair settlement, but what about the ones who suddenly remember, after thirty years or so, that they were also abused by the same priest. The lawyers and the tactics they use to prove their case in court makes one wonder if ethics was ever taught in law school. The church itself has been caught paying off victims that have lost their case in court.
