Kids First Child care centers are used much more these days then they used to be. There is one, two, and three star centers. There is an abundance of working mothers now, and there are government programs to help parents pay the cost of childcare. “The answer is not ending welfare, but providing supplemental programs that can realistically assist a single mother.”(Sabatke 498). Some work places may even have a center at job site or near by. Daycare centers are inspected monthly to ensure the well being of the children. Compared to some other centers, Kids First may be a great choice. Kids may not always come home clean and tidy, but learning new curriculum and songs every day is a must. Kids do not come hungry. Meals and snacks are fed on time. First one needs to look at the credentials of the staff and ratings by DHS. This is a two and a half-star center. This means they have to meet a certain criteria set by the Department of Human Services. The staff has to have a certain amount of training every year, and no bad inspections or violations from DHS(Battles). The capacity of the center is 78. They are working on being a three star center. The three directors are Leslie Battles, Mandie Velnor, and Tracy Rice. Leslie and Tracy have a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, and Mandie a degree in early childhood development. They did not want to do school teaching, but open up centers to be closer to their children(Rice). They also have a another daycare center called Kids First Two, with a capacity of fifty. They are working on center three, which will be more for school age children. This will make it easier for them to provide transportation to and from school. One downfall with Kids First, is that there is no transportation for school age kids. Second is the safety and cleanliness of the center. The center is equipped with fire and burglar alarms. They have monthly drills for tornados and fires. They playground is inspected daily. They check to make sure there has been no glass or other dangerous items thrown in this area. They also check the playground equipment and make sure it is strong and steady. There are wood chips that cover the ground so if the children fall off the play gym they will not get hurt as badly. Trees cover about 65% of the playground. This makes it nice for the kids in the summer time. They can get plenty of sun and shade if they are too hot. They are also inspected once a month by the Department of Human Services. Inspections for the last three months have been above 96%. When the get inspected, the results are accessible for parent to review. They have a chart for the bathroom. The evening teacher cleans it and the morning teacher inspects it to make sure it was cleaned properly the night before. Third are activities and learning. In the baby room, infants from six weeks to twelve months, there is a ball pit, filled with only one-layer balls. This make it easier for the babies to climb in and out. There is also cushioned steps that are low to the ground. This helps the babies as they are learning to crawl, push and stand up, and walk. The babies in this room is pretty much on their own schedule. They take feedings when they want, but they do have set meal times, and are working on set nap times. The next room is twelve to eighteen months. They are more on a set schedule here. Naps are usually on track. They are zoning in on speech and song learning. The next room is eighteen months to two years old. They have access to a television here. They watch Sesame Street, Barney, and other educational programs focused other learning. The next room is for the three-year- olds. There are many centers here. There is the dress up center, that has fireman, policeman, mailman, ballerina and dresses to dress up in. There is also a rice table. The rice table could compare to a water table. It is full of rice that the children can pour back and forth from containers and shapes and other objects. This is good for them learning science. The four year old room is more a pre kindergarten based program. The have a different theme they learn about every week. One week it is Thanksgiving, the next summer, space, and the ocean and many more. They also introduce new language like Spanish”...It would have pleased me to hear my teachers address me in Spanish...”(Bishop 323). They say it is easy for young children to learn different languages. They also have two computers, which help the children learn how to use a mouse and the keys on the computer. This helps with accuracy and keeping their hands steady. They also learn how to write their names and letters and numbers. This age is getting them ready for kindergarten. Kids First is a house that was expanded and turned into a daycare center. It sits in a quiet neighborhood .With mostly older neighbors. Parents come from surrounding areas to bring their children here. If a parent is looking for a center and does not feel comfortable with ones they have seen, they should check out Kids First.
