Maximus Confessor's Is it good to deny yourself luxury and convenience, or do a difficult thing just for the mere fact that it is difficult? Many people including myself and Maximus Confessor think yes. To deny yourself luxury and convenience is to give yourself to god and sacrifice for god. It is something that is very hard to do and to withstand something like giving up all material possessions takes a lot of strength and heart to accomplish. In these days of a technologically reliable world it is hard to not use one of many technological devices. Take cell phones for instance. A person may break their cell phone and be without it for a while, during the times without their cell phone this person may feel a withdrawal from the world. They may feel out of touch with the outside world because they cannot be reached by other people at all times. A certain attachment is formed with these machines. Another example is the ever growing fascination with away messages on instant messaging services provided by cable modems. It allows people to leave a message online so that other online users may write messages to them without actually talking to them and can be read at a later time. Many people find themselves leaving messages telling people where they are and what they are doing at all times.
