Faber’s purpose for books
Faber is one of the most important characters in the book, Fahrenheit 451 by: Ray Bradbury. Faber is an elderly retired professor who helps Montag understand life, meanings of books and to eventually escape the city. Faber possesses a few hidden books and wishes that he could have more. Faber expresses a love for books, but also admits to his guilt when it comes to books, as he himself was afraid to speak out and stand up against the burning of books. At the end, Faber is able to act out his wishes through Montag. By giving Montag directions in earplugs, Faber helps Montag escape through the city. Ultimately, Faber becomes a teacher to Montag, teaching him what he knows about the value of books. Faber has strong feelings for books and expresses the many reasons for the purpose of books during their initial meeting in Faber’s home. Faber states that books offer three things; quality, texture, leisure and most importantly they have details of life.
