Savage Inequalities In Savage Inequalities, Jonathan Kozol describes the conditions of several of America's public schools. Kozol visited schools in approximately 30 neighborhoods and found that there was a wide inconsistency in the conditions between the poorer schools in inner-city communities and schools in the suburban communities that were wealthier. Some of the cities that he visited were East St. Louis, Harlem, the Bronx, Chicago, Jersey City, and San Antonio East St. Louis, Harlem, the Bronx, Chicago, Jersey City, and San Antonio. He says that integration has declined and that the poor and minorities are not receiving the same educational opportunities that other children are getting. He describes one school that he visited in East St. Louis that was overflowing with swage, this had been a regular occurrence. Many of the school do not have their very basic needs met; their rooms have no heat, few supplies or texts, labs with no equipment or running water, fumes, and overwhelming money shortages. Schools have had to lay off teachers, expanding class size, in order to scrape up enough money to try to improve on what they have. Kozol is trying to get people to care about children other than their own.
