GLUCOSE December 2, 2003 CINS 1200 Some researchers believe that kids' weight gain has more to do with low activity levels than with diet. The average child spends 24 hours a week watching television. Add to that computer games & time spent doing schoolwork and it's clear our kids are leading very sedentary lives. Most people with glucose have either style 1 or type 2. Type 1 used to be called juvenile glucose, because it is usually diagnosed in childhood. It is also called insulin-dependent glucose. People with type 1 don't make enough insulin, a hormone that allows your body to extract glucose from your blood and make use of the energy you've taken in through food. We don't know why some people don't make insulin on their own, though obviously there is some genetic connection. But it is not related to obesity. Type 2 glucose is the variety that your school nurse is warning you about. You may also hear it referred to as non-insulin-dependent glucose, or misleadingly as adult-onset glucose. People with type 2 do make insulin, but their bodies don't use it properly. They are what we call "insulin resistant." Again, experts can't put a finger on a single cause, though certainly we have identified many risk factors.
