The scarlet letter “A” had many different meanings to different people in the novel. To the Puritan townspeople the letter was a source of revealing Hester’s sin and wrong doing for all to see and take after, and to alleviate her in the eyes of God. “…she would become the general symbol at which the preacher and moralist might point, and in which they might vivify and embody their images of woman’s frailty and sinful passion” (Hawthorne 54). This quote shows that the letter was used to view the wrong doings of a Hester and to use as a stature of what not to do in society. The Puritans are firmly against Hester’s actions and believe that she has dishonored them along with herself. They feel that she must take responsibility for her sin and by this they mean, wear the scarlet letter for all to see. The outcome of her “punishment” however is not what the Puritans have hoped to achieve and through out the book, Hester’s sin has grown from that of passion to one of intent.
