Benjamin Lopez November 3, 2003 Essay Racism With more than 6 billion people, the world has a large variety of human shapes and colors. However, by nature, the human being tends to see others as black, white, yellow, red and brown. As human spread throughout the world, their adaptations to different living conditions and genetic mutations added distinct characteristics to the people. In this sense, the concept of race—a group of people with inherited physical characteristics that distinguish it from another group—is a reality. Therefore, racism is when the basis of discrimination is race. This discrimination is often the result of an attitude called prejudice. In my experience, I found that this kind of attitude can be very uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous. Proviso West, which is a high school in Chicago, is a high school with little diversity in relation to students from different ethnic backgrounds.
