James Bond as action hero in the pre- credits sequence of GoldenEye James Bond is an action hero in the ‘007’ films e.g. GoldenEye. An action hero is the main character in Action films. The action hero is usually white, with a few exceptions e.g. Men in black with Will Smith. They are usually either well built or handsome. They are very cunning and always have a plan to defeat the ‘baddie’. They have a wide range of skills and can drive any vehicle or use any gun, there are some give-aways to James Bond e.g. his gun. The action hero has to rescue somebody usually a female or somebody famous and escape just as the building explodes. A few actors who play action heroes Bruce Willis Die Hard, Harrison Ford Indiana Jones, Keanu Reeves Speed. Action heroes also perform impossible stunts, which are performed by professional stunt men. They also escape out of impossible situations like a building exploding and they are the only people to get out. There are typical conventions of action films. They have a main character, the action hero who saves the day. The films never really go into much detail about the action hero’s background. The plot of the film is like a typical cartoon comic, hero and villain are a big contrast, and villain tries to take over the world and the hero defeats him. There is usually not much dialogue, which makes it cheaper to export to foreign non-English speaking countries. They aren’t usually filmed in the country it is surposed to be because they find a country to suit them. They use big open places so they can do car chases and explosions e.g. buildings and not harm anything. Sometimes if they need a big explosion they would use model buildings. The action hero hunts down the villain how is threatening the planet, it involves vehicle chases, capture and explosions. They can be almost comical with the witty or ironic lines, which shows that the action hero is cool and it should not be taken seriously. There has been a few spin off films e.g. Austin Powers. Bond has changed for the 90’s. The past Bonds, Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and George Lazenby. Bond has changed with the time. Connery used to be cool, ‘classless, womanising, in the 60’s. Brosnan is similar to Connery. He has sexist comments, he is very confident with his look; he patronises women expecting them to fancy him. People criticise his sexist remarks and his cheesy one liners that are in very film. Men like the film because of the action and fighting scenes.
