We use it every day. It’s not tangible. It can’t be seen, heard or touched, yet it’s an active part of humanity. We use it when we sit down on a chair, expecting it to hold us up. We use it when we turn the key to our car’s ignition, presuming the vehicle will roar to life. We use it when we twist the knob on our sink and anticipate water to flow freely from the faucet. We use it when we approach the electric door of a grocery store and continue walking forward expecting the door to automatically open. We use it when we set our alarm at night with the assumption that we will actually wake up the next day. What is this phenomenon that mankind regularly exercises so often? It is faith. As a Pastor, I hear a lot of people talk about faith. Faith in God, faith in family, faith in friends, faith in self. I believe many of them have the best intentions when they mention faith, but there are times when I get the impression they don’t know what authentic faith really is. So then, what is true, genuine faith? To get a better idea of what faith is, let’s first explore what faith is not. Faith is not a blind leap in the dark. Many believe that by metaphorically closing our eyes and stepping out into an unexplored arena or belief, is in essence exercising true faith.
