After analyzing the assigned readings for this week in Nancy Folbre’s book, The Invisible Heart, I realized that the issue of welfare and its impact on the family was one of the most controversial topics discussed in the text. Throughout the readings, various aspects of the social welfare program were criticized and praised. However in the end, the social welfare program here in the United States was made out to be a “female problem.” It was noted in the text as “the umbilical cord through which the mainstream society sustains the isolated ghetto society” (Folbre, 114). This paper will discuss the controversy surrounding social welfare and its impact on the family. Initially the social welfare program was implemented with a goal to strengthen the family and improve the economic security of its dependents.
